Understanding the Takate Kote (Gote Shibari): The Box Tie, Its Structure, and Its Risks
Spoiler: the TK is not a beginner tie. But it IS the tie everyone asks me about - so let's talk about it properly.
In almost every workshop, somebody raises a hand and asks: "When do we learn the TK?" I keep hearing this question so many times from you guys! And I understand why. The takate kote - also called gote, TK, or box tie - is THE iconic shibari image: arms folded behind the back, chest framed in neat wraps, the model's whole posture saying I surrender, and I trust you.
It is also the tie most often involved in nerve injuries. Including, once, with my own model - you can read that whole honest story in my article about nerve damage in shibari. So this is not going to be a "copy these 12 steps" tutorial. This is the box tie the way I teach it in workshops: what it is, how it's built, where the danger lives, and how to know when NOT to tie it. To learn this tie I always recommend to take a in-person workshop with a professional, so you avoid problems as much as possible. For safety reasons, this article is not going to teach you how to, it will explain what you need to know about it, the dangers, the structure and variations.
What does "takate kote" even mean?
Time for a little Japanology moment (I didn't get my degree for nothing, right?!).
Takate kote 高手小手 - roughly "high hands, small hands (forearms)". The term comes from old Japanese restraint techniques, where the arms were bound high behind the back.
Gote 後手 - literally "hands behind". This is the word you'll hear most in Japan.
TK - the Western shorthand for takate kote.
Box tie - the English name, because the folded arms make a box shape behind the back.
Four names, one tie. If you hear gote, TK, takate kote, or box tie - people mean the same family of ties: arms behind the back, wraps around chest and arms. (If some of this vocabulary is new to you, my shibari vocabulary guide will help you feel at home in any workshop.)
The structure of the box tie
Every school ties the gote a little differently - 2 ropes or 3, different frictions, different stems. But the skeleton is always the same, and understanding the skeleton matters much more than memorizing choreography. Your hands should know why every wrap exists.
The wrists
It starts with the arms folded behind the back (usually forearms parallel, each hand near the opposite elbow) and a single column tie - around both wrists. Single column tie can be of your choice, I prefer to use a quick release square knot, since if the model gets tired, I can easily release the wrists. Single column tie should be Not tight! The wrists are NOT what holds the tie. If your wrist rope is doing all the work, something is already wrong. Two fingers should slide comfortably between rope and skin - always.
The upper wraps
From the wrists, the rope travels up and around the chest and upper arms, above the chest. These wraps sit on the meaty part of the upper arms, high, closer to the shoulders, 1-2 fingers lower than the armpit. Very important to know where the nerves go and communicate with your model to make sure the wraps are places well. Check this article to learn about the nerve map.
The wraps should lie flat, parallel, with even tension - like one wide band, not separate cutting lines. Sometimes you will see 3 wraps or even 4 together.
The lower wraps
A second set of wraps goes below the chest. Together with the upper wraps they create that beautiful frame, and they share the load between them. Upper wraps should be tighter than the lower wraps, since they carry most of the load.
Tension is everything here: too loose and the tie shifts and slides into dangerous places, too tight and you're compressing things that should never be compressed. The rope should hug, not bite.
The cinches (kannuki)
Kannuki 閂 means "bolt" - like the bolt on a door. These are the small vertical cinches between the arm and the torso that lock the wraps in place so nothing travels. This is what makes a gote stable. A gote without proper kannuki is a gote that will migrate onto nerves the moment your model moves or breathes deeply.
That's it. Wrist tie, two bands of wraps, a stem down the back, cinches to lock it all. Simple to describe - and honestly, that simplicity is the trap. The difficulty of the TK is not in the knots. It's in the placement and the tension.
Why we all love this tie
Because it feels like nothing else. When the arms are folded away, the model literally cannot "do" anything - and for many people that is the deepest permission to stop doing and just BE. The chest opens, the breath slows down, the whole body says: someone else is holding me now. Many of my models describe the gote as a hug they can finally stop holding up themselves.
It's also the gateway to a huge part of shibari - it's the base for many suspensions and classic kinbaku scenes. But please hear me: you do not need a TK to have a deep rope experience. Connection lives in a single column tie too.
Why the TK is the most dangerous tie you'll learn
As you all know, shibari is a dangerous activity - and the gote is the tie most often implicated in nerve damage. I'm not saying this to scare you - I'm saying it because it's the single best-documented rope injury there is. When neurologists finally sat down and actually studied rope bondage injuries (there's a 2023 paper in the journal Cureus, by Khodulev and colleagues, if you like to read the real science - I do), the radial nerve came out as the most commonly injured structure by a mile: 90% of the injured people in that study, and almost all of them had been tied in a box-tie configuration. Let that number sit with you. Nearly every serious rope nerve injury they could find pointed straight back to arms tied behind the back.
The radial nerve - why the gote bites
The main troublemaker is the radial nerve. It spirals around the bone of your upper arm, and there is a stretch of it - roughly in the middle third of the upper arm - where about 6 cm of nerve sits pressed right up against the bone with almost nothing to cushion it. Anatomists use the deltoid tuberosity as their landmark (that little bump you can feel on the outside of the arm, where the deltoid muscle attaches) - the nerve runs directly behind it. And that is exactly the zone where a lower wrap loves to land, or where a wrap slides down into under load.
Press there hard enough, or long enough, and you get compression neuropathy - the rope literally squashes the nerve, starving it of blood flow and damaging the insulation (the myelin) around it. And here's the part that keeps me up at night: it can happen without any pain or warning at all. Your model can feel completely fine, chat with you, smile... and come out with a "drop hand" (wrist drop) - a hand and wrist that won't extend properly, numbness across the back of the hand, sometimes for weeks. In that study, suspensions as short as 5 to 25 minutes were enough to cause it. Recovery ranged from two minutes to five months. Five. Months. From a single tie.
It's not only the radial nerve
The radial gets all the headlines, but the gote can catch others too:
Ulnar nerve - the "funny bone" nerve. Damage shows up as numbness or tingling in the little finger and half the ring finger. Often it's the kannuki digging up into the armpit, or pressure near the elbow. And this one can build up slowly, over many sessions of repeated compression - not only in one dramatic moment.
Median nerve - compression nearer the wrist or palm can change sensation in the thumb and first fingers.
Axillary nerve and the brachial plexus - that whole bundle of nerves crossing the shoulder and armpit. Over-tight load-bearing rope in the armpit, or extreme shoulder angles (arms cranked too high), can irritate or injure them.
There is no "safe" placement - only informed choices
I really want you to hear this one. A well-known survey of rope bottoms, run by the researcher who blogs as Topologist, looked at exactly where people prefer their TK wraps to sit and what goes wrong when they don't. The headline finding? There is no generally "safe" placement for TK wraps. The best you can do with the upper wraps is err on the side of placing them as high as possible (as far as comfort and tie integrity allow). For the lower wraps it's messier - the vulnerable spot isn't one neat point; different bodies seem to have different danger zones down the arm.
And the finding that matters most for how you tie: the majority of bottoms reported comfort or safety issues even when the rope was placed exactly where they'd asked for it. Ideal placement is not the same thing as safe placement. So please - take that as your permission to speak up the moment a TK isn't working for you, and to feel completely justified in asking your top for a different tie.
Nerve or circulation? Learn the difference cold
This is the check you'll make a hundred times, so learn it properly:
Circulation issues affect the whole hand or foot - it goes cold, pale, puffy, bluish or dark red. Usually more gradual, more visible, and it comes back once the rope is off. Monitor it, don't camp there forever, but on its own it rarely causes lasting damage.
Nerve issues are local and can be sudden - tingling, a burning or electric sensation, a numb patch on specific fingers, and above all weakness (a hand that won't grip, a wrist that won't push back). Nerves can be injured silently, without the skin looking dramatic at all.
The trap is this: a limb can look perfectly fine while a nerve is being crushed. So you never rely on colour alone - you test movement and sensation. If it's circulation, watch it. If it's nerve - especially weakness - the rope comes off immediately, no debate, no "let's wait and see."
What actually turns the risk up
From both the rope educators and the medical literature, the same handful of risk multipliers keep showing up:
Narrow bands - a single tight line concentrates pressure into a hotspot; several even wraps spread the load.
Uneven tension - one wrap doing more work than the others cuts in like a wire.
Load and leverage - suspensions, hard partials, sudden drops or rotations multiply the force on every wrap (a lot of the documented injuries happened in a transition or a slip, not a still hang).
Joint angle - arms cranked high, shoulders over-rotated - the more extreme the position, the more the nerves are stretched and exposed.
Time - even gentle pressure becomes dangerous if it sits there long enough.
The individual body - low body fat, low muscle mass, a previous nerve injury, certain health conditions - all of these make nerves more vulnerable. My models with less padding on their arms feel that radial danger zone far sooner than others.
This happened to my darling Dallan after almost 7 years of my tying, on a gote I had already tested on other models. She couldn't hold a glass or button her shirt for over a week. And one more honest number from my practice: 3 out of 5 people don't feel comfortable even partially suspended on a regular gote. This tie is simply not for every body. That's not failure - that's anatomy.
The checkpoints I teach in every workshop
Before the rope touches skin
Ask about previous nerve injuries. Old damage makes nerves more vulnerable.
Check shoulder mobility. Ask your model to hold their arms behind their back, unbound, for a minute or two. Uncomfortable already? Then a classic TK is not today's tie.
Agree on words. Not just a safe word - agree that "my hand feels weird" is ALWAYS worth saying out loud. Rope bunny = partner, not prop.
While you tie
Placement first, prettiness second. Wraps on the meaty upper part of the arm, away from the radial danger zone.
Check your tensions! Every wrap even, no single line cutting deeper than the others. Two fingers under every band.
Do hand checks. Ask your model to squeeze your fingers, to lift their thumbs and push the wrist back against your hand. Weakness in that push is a red flag for the radial nerve - untie the arms now, calmly, no drama.
Learn the difference between circulation and nerves. Slowly tingly, warm, puffy hands = circulation, monitor it and don't stay there forever. Sudden numbness, electric zings, or a weak wrist = nerve, and the tie comes off immediately.
After you untie
Untying is not the end - watch the hands, massage the arms, keep your model warm, and check in the next day too. (Aftercare is a whole art of its own - I wrote about why it matters so much.)

When NOT to tie a gote
Please do not use this tie on everyone!!! Skip the TK (for today, or for this person) when:
your model has limited shoulder mobility or can't comfortably hold hands behind their back;
there's a history of nerve damage, or their hands go numb easily;
it's your first session together and you don't know their body yet;
you learned the TK last week. (I'm serious. This is an intermediate tie built on months of tension practice.)
And here's the beautiful part: you always have an option that doesn't involve tying the arms. A diamond karada, a butterfly harness, any of the chest harnesses I've collected here - your model still gets the frame, the hug, the surrender, without the nerve risk. Choosing a different tie is not "less shibari". It's better shibari, because it fits the body in front of you.
How to actually learn it
Not from one YouTube video, please! Learn the TK the way it deserves: with a foundation. Master your single and double column ties until they're boring. Practice keeping even tension across wraps on easier harnesses. Learn hand checks until they're automatic, not something you remember halfway through. Then learn the gote itself with feedback - a teacher, a workshop, or a structured path.
